Abstract Analysing assemblages found in funerary contexts, we have reconsidered the prestige value that is generally applied to the components of the Bell Beaker complex. In single graves, four types of association are distinguished : weapons and pots, tools and pots, jewellery and pots, and pots alone. Graves with weapons are rare and exclusively masculine. Moreover, the orientation of the bodies (preferentially north-south) differs from that of the other groups. On the other hand, the same types of pots are present in the four categories of graves and the quality of ceramic production is very unequal within any one category, even among the richest graves.
